Photographing googly eyes
The eyes themselves are not the hard part of a good photo. A phone photographing a small, shiny, close object outdoors is fighting its own defaults the whole time, and knowing what those defaults are is most of what separates a photo that goes straight up from one that gets kicked back.
Close enough to be unmistakable, wide enough to show the object
This is the single most common reason a submission gets turned down, according to the app's own checker: not fake eyes, not a bad subject, just a photo where the eyes are too small and too far away to be sure they're really there. A human squinting at a thumbnail has to be able to tell, instantly, that this is a real pair of physical googly eyes and not a smudge, a bird, or a coincidence of shadow.
The fix pulls in two directions at once, and both matter. Get close enough that the eyes read clearly: the two domes, the loose pupil inside each one, are plainly visible, not a pale blur in the middle of the frame. But stay back enough to show what they're stuck to. Two white dots on a field of nothing proves nothing. Two white dots on a parking meter, a garden gnome, or your dog's collar is the whole point of the photo, and it's the object that makes people smile. Frame so both things are true in the same shot: fill a good third of the frame with the eyes, and let the rest of the frame answer the question "eyes on what."
Light: overcast beats bright sun
Googly eyes are two glossy plastic domes, and glossy domes are small convex mirrors. In bright direct sun they don't just get lit, they reflect a hard point of sunlight straight back at the lens, often blowing out the one detail that actually needs to read: the pupil floating inside. Hard sun also throws a sharp black shadow from the dome's own rim across part of the pupil, which can make an eye that's perfectly fine in person look broken or half-missing in the photo.
An overcast sky is a diffuse light source the size of the whole sky, so instead of one hard glint you get soft, even light with nothing sharp enough to blow out. If you're stuck shooting in full sun, your own shadow is a free diffuser: step so your body blocks the direct sun from hitting the eyes, and shoot in that softer light instead.
Reflections are the specific problem, and they're fixable by moving
Even in decent light, a googly eye reflects whatever is in front of it, and the thing most often in front of it is you. A dome held at arm's length with your phone up to take the photo is a dome with a small, recognisable photo of a phone and a person in it. It rarely ruins the shot outright, but it's the kind of thing that's obvious once you notice it and easy to avoid once you know to look.
Two things fix it, and neither costs you anything:
- Change your angle, even slightly. A reflection is a straight line from light source, to dome, to lens. Move a little to either side, or shoot from slightly above or below eye level instead of dead-on, and the reflection slides off the part of the dome that's actually in focus.
- Watch what's directly behind the camera, not just what's in the shot. Bright sky reflects as a pale glare across the whole dome; your own silhouette reflects as a dark smudge. Both come from the same direction: straight back along your line of sight. Stepping to the side changes what the dome sees even though it doesn't change what you see.
Take the photo, glance at what actually landed in the pupils, and if there's a reflection you don't want, move a step and try again. It costs five seconds and it's the difference between a photo that reads instantly and one where someone has to work out what they're looking at.
Focus: phones love the background, not your small foreground object
A phone camera's autofocus is built to find the largest, most contrasty thing in frame, and a small pair of eyes against a big background (a wall, a hedge, open sky) often loses that contest to whatever's behind them. The result is a photo where the wall is pin-sharp and the eyes, the one thing the photo is actually about, are a soft blur.
Force it: tap directly on the eyes on your screen before you shoot. Nearly every phone camera, stock or third-party, will lock focus (and usually exposure) on whatever you tap. If your eyes are very close to the lens, closer than the phone's minimum focus distance, the image will refuse to sharpen no matter what you tap; if that happens, ease back a little rather than pushing in further, and let the extra distance make the shot save-able.
Angle and eye level
Shoot from roughly the same height as the googly eyes, not looking sharply down at them from standing height. A steep downward angle flattens a small round object into an odd, foreshortened shape and buries it in whatever surface it's stuck to. Crouching, or holding the phone lower, so the eyes are looking back at the lens more or less level, reads as a portrait of the eyes rather than a photo of the ground with eyes somewhere in it.
Steadiness in low light
In dim conditions (dusk, shade, an overcast evening) phone cameras compensate by slowing the shutter down, which means any movement during that exposure shows up as blur. There's no trick here beyond the obvious one: brace against something solid (a wall, a post, your own knee) rather than holding the phone out freehand, and hold still for a beat after you tap the shutter rather than moving the instant you've pressed it.
The app-specific part: why you can't upload a photo
The camera in the app is the only way in. There is no gallery picker, no "choose from camera roll." That isn't a missing feature, it's deliberate, and the reason is about where the pin goes, not about the photo.
The location on a pin comes from your phone's GPS at the exact moment you post, never from data embedded in the photo file. If the app let you upload a photo taken earlier, the pin would land wherever you happen to be standing when you open the app, which might be your kitchen, not wherever the eyes actually are. A pin in the wrong place defeats the entire idea, since the whole point is that someone else can walk to that spot and find what you found. Taking the photo live, in the app, is what keeps the place on the map honestly tied to the object in the photo.
Wait for the GPS to sharpen while you frame the shot. The app needs a fix accurate to 50 metres or better before it will accept a pin, and it keeps asking for a better fix the whole time you're composing, holding onto the best one it gets rather than settling for the first. In practice that means the seconds you spend lining up the shot, checking the light, tapping to focus, moving to kill a reflection, are also the seconds the location is quietly getting more precise. There's rarely a reason to rush the photo before the fix has had a chance to settle; framing carefully and getting an accurate pin tend to happen on the same timeline anyway.
